Lionel Messi Becomes Sorare’s Brand Ambassador and Investor

Lionel Messi, a football star who has bagged seven Ballon d’Or Awards, has joined hands with Sorare to be its brand ambassador and investor.

Sorare is an Ethereum-based fantasy soccer game platform that leverages non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Therefore, Messi will be instrumental in how fans connect with players and clubs.

Nicolas Julia, the co-founder and CEO of Sorare, pointed out:

“We believe Messi will help us set new standards in how we do this, and we look forward to sharing what new content and fan experiences we’ve been collaborating on soon.”

He added that the partnership was a “huge milestone” for the platform.

Messi, who currently plays for the French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), said:

“Fans have always looked for ways to express their passion and get closer to the players and teams that they love and Sorare’s combination of a fantasy game with digital collectibles gives fans new ways to do that, wherever they are in the world.”

Sorare users usually have the chance to create their preferred teams and trade NFT-based football player cards.

Comprising at least 2 million users spread across 185 countries, Sorare was previously valued at $4.3 billion. The Paris-based startup has also partnered with more than 300 sports teams and major leagues, such as Germany’s Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga.

Sorare has expanded its scope beyond football to include other sports like baseball and basketball.

For instance, the National Basketball Association (NBA) recently inked a deal with the platform to enhance the fan experience and render more interaction, Blockchain.News reported.

The NBA acknowledged that the fantasy basketball game would allow fans to develop a lineup of NFT-powered digital collectables based on their favourite teams and players.

Sorare seeks to boost digital assets and blockchain adoption in daily life by creating unique digital tokens on its fantasy platform.

“There has been a lot of hype around different football projects using non-fungible technology up to now, but the ones that stick around will be those that offer real underlying utility and see non-fungible technology as the means to achieving their goals, not the ends,” Julia stated.

Premier League in Talks to Enter $34.7M Deal with NFT firm Sorare

One of football’s largest organizations globally is planning to talk with its teams about a proposed multi-year contract with Sorare for digital collectables.

shutterstock_1422698036 p.jpg

If the deal is signed, the English Premier League and its 20 clubs will enter an approximately $34.7 million per year deal with the non-fungible tokens (NFT) digital collectables platform that will include a multi-year contract for static images of players in the form of NFTs.

According to Sky News, the deal could be formally agreed upon within weeks.

Furthermore, the deal will replace the Premier League’s initial deal with ConsenSys – blockchain infrastructure provider of Infura and MetaMask – which had been in the works earlier this year but not signed, according to a report from Sky News.

The ConsenSys deal was under renegotiation until recently, however, it failed to go through after one Premier League club executive said they had been told that the Sorare contract was more lucrative.

Premier League’s deal with Paris-based start-up Sorare will allow its hundreds of millions of avid fans to own a famous photo of their favourite player in the form of NFT artwork, as well as sports highlights.

French footballer Kylian Mbappe and the giant Japanese tech investor SoftBank has been the key backer of Sorare, who recently partnered with the NBA and other sporting leagues. It recently raised $680 million and was valued at over $4 billion.

The Premier League also has another separate ongoing deal with Dapper Labs – another NFT specialist who started the popular NBA Top Shots platform.

The Premier League is the UK’s top-tier football organization. The combined revenue of all the 20 Premier League clubs was projected to be around 6.2 billion euros for the 2020/21 season.

FC Barcelona set to launch NFT soccer moments with Ownix

The FC Barcelona soccer club has partnered with Ownix to debut the launch of its nonfungible token, or NFT, collection focused on enhancing the connection to its global audience.

The series will showcase historic moments from the club’s 122-year history, one that includes an illustrious trophy display of 95 domestic and international triumphs, including 26 national league and five UEFA Champions League titles, according to archive data from Wikipedia.

The digital assets will be facilitated through Ownix’s marketplace, and is expected to launch in the final week of November utilizing the platform’s native ERC-20 token ONX.

Cointelegraph spoke to Guy Elhanani, the CEO of Ownix, for exclusive insight into the partnership.

Cointelegraph: Will the NFT collection be immediately accessible to Barcelona’s global fan base or will, for instance, season-ticket holders and other core groups be granted early access?

“We’re opening our collection to all Barcelona fans and anyone around the world, we’re not restricting it to the fan-base.”

NFTs are becoming rapidly adopted in the sporting landscape, not just for their lucrative financial appeal, but also as an opportunity to engage fans and supporters around the world with more immersive and personal experiences. The likes of Dapper Labs, Sorare and Socios to name a few, have all made considerable advancements in this nascent space, collaborating with some of the world’s top professional leagues, clubs and athletes.

Ethereum-based NFT marketplace Sorare has recently penned partnership agreements with Spain’s top-tier soccer division, La Liga, to launch digital cards of players, as well as Germany’s corresponding league, the Bundesliga, to introduce digital moments.

The platform has reported trading volumes in excess of $170 million throughout 2021 and expects to double that figure before the year is out.

Cointelegraph: How will the assets be launched on the marketplace? In a dutch auction, limited edition drop, minting event, etc?

“The first 5 NFTs will be launched in a minting event which will take place within the next few weeks in FCB facilities. In the first few weeks after the launch, the platform will offer unique items as NFTs. Further down the line, limited editions and collections will also be put up for auction.”

To conclude our conversion, we asked Elhanani to share his expectation for the receptiveness of Barcelona’s fans and supporters in embracing this new asset class.

He expressed high “enthusiasm” for the adoption as both parties seek to connect their relationship on a deeper level, a sentiment echoed in comments from President of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta.
